During the weekof April 29 through May 3, 2025, all public high schools, including charterschools, will be required to provide studentsin grades 11 and 12 with information on workers’ rights, including:

  • laws on childlabor
  • wage and hourprotections
  • worker safety
  • workers’ compensation
  • unemployment insurance
  • paid sick leave
  • paid family leave
  • state disability insurance
  • the California Family Rights Act
  • prohibition against misclassification of employees as independent contractors


Schools are required to educate studentson their right to organizea union in the workplace, prohibitions againstretaliation, and the pivotal role of labor movements in securing laborprotections for workers.

Additionally, this information should be conveyedto students, where appropriate, in their United States History, Principles ofAmerican Democracy, Economics, or other appropriate academic courses (e.g.,Advisory, CTE, etc.). Schools must also provide students with an introductionto state-approved apprenticeship programs as an alternative career path.
