Roosevelt Robotics Shines at Competition, Wins Judge’s Choice Award

Roosevelt High School and MSTMA’s First Tech Challenge Robotics Team, the Tech Dolls (Team #20614), celebrated a monumental achievement at their recent competition. Not only did the team secure 4th place—a significant improvement from last year—but they also brought home the esteemed Judge’s Choice Award, a recognition given to the most inspiring and innovative team.

The judges were particularly impressed with the originality of the team’s robot, lovingly named "Benbie," a creative nod to Principal Ben Gertner and the iconic Barbie. The team’s unique approach to design, problem-solving, and collaboration set them apart from the competition, including a higher placement than their cross-town rivals at Garfield High School.

Mr. Javier Rico, the Tech Dolls’ dedicated coach, expressed immense pride in the students’ accomplishments. “The kids’ performance today was the best birthday present I could have asked for.”

The Judge’s Choice Award honors teams that inspire with their innovation, teamwork, and creativity—qualities the Tech Dolls exhibited throughout the competition. The entire Rough Rider community is proud of the team's hard work and determination, which continues to set a shining example of Boyle Heights excellence.

Congratulations to the Tech Dolls for their outstanding performance and to Mr. Javier for his exceptional guidance. Roosevelt High School and MSTMA look forward to more achievements from its robotics team in the future!
